Beware of metallic objects during an MRI exam
To ensure the patient
safety, medical institutions follow safety guidelines on a routine basis that
all patients must be required to remove all metallic belongings during an MRI (Magnetic
Resonance Imaging) exam.
Some metallic objects heat
up and result in burns to patients. In addition, ferromagnetic objects
will be attracted to the MRI magnetic field and damage the scanner. Some caused serious incidents or injuries to medical
personnel.
As you can see, the image
on the left is normal and the image on the right is distorted by hairpins.
Besides hairpins, any
metallic objects such as dentures, removable orthodontic appliances, disposable
hot packs, or anything with ionic parts (i.e. hair thickening or gray hair coverage
powder) should be removed in advance of an MRI exam.
Our hospital group is
