Former Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad visited Southern TOHOKU General Hospital
Former Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad visited Southern TOHOKU General Hospital, Koriyama and its cancer-specialized facilities on March 26, 2015. 

 

Tun Dr Mahathir initiated “Look East” policy and “emulation of post-war Japan” to give a boost to the productivity of the Malaysian economy during his first term as prime minister in 1981. He left medicine for politics and has been paying special attention to healthcare field. The purpose of his visit was to learn about Japan’s advanced medical technologies. 

 

Founder and Chairman of the Board Dr. Kazuo Watanabe, Superintendent of Southern TOHOKU General Hospital Dr. Yasushi Teranishi, Director of Southern TOHOKU BNCT Research Center Dr. Kanichi Seto and hospital management team accompanied Tun Dr Mahathir on visits to Proton Therapy Center, PET Center and BNCT Research Center. BNCT Research Center was constructed in September 2014 and will be open in October 2015.

 

At the dinner reception, Dr. Kazuo Watanabe welcomed Tun Dr Mahathir’s visit as a significant gesture for STGH and showed his willingness to collaborate with Malaysia in healthcare. Tun Dr Mahathir said that “PBT and BNCT facilities are very unique and will greatly benefit Malaysia and south Asian people. He looks forward to joint research collaboration to deepen friendship between two countries and contribute to the world.”
