Southern TOHOKU BNCT Research Center

Southern TOHOKU Hospital Group (STHG) received government grants to establish Southern TOHOKU Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) Research Center in 2012.

BNCT (Boron Neutron Capture Therapy), a potentially new treatment, can selectively target and destroy tumor cells. BNCT differs from conventional radiotherapies, which uses newly developed accelerators to generate neutrons to irradiate boron-absorbed tumor cells.

After clinical trials commenced in 2016, we started clinical application for locally advanced or locally recurrent head and neck malignant tumors as insured medical treatment since June 2020.

In the near future, we will expand indications for malignant brain tumors and cancers located relatively close to the body surface. We are con dent that this new treatment modality will bring a ray of hope to patients with intractable cancers.
